It’s Kenya season! So we thought we’d bring you two new spectacular coffees from two amazing producers!

This washed lot from Tegu Factory Cooperative is clean, expressive and juicy, just as you’d expect from a high quality Kenyan coffee.

In the cup we’re tasting strawberry laces, rhubarb and custard, orange zest and butter.

A very juicy cup and this is one of our favourite coffees we’ve had the pleasure of trying and sourcing this year.
THE PROCESS

At the factory, cherries are first hand-sorted to remove underripes and overripes.
They are then floated to separate lower-density cherries before being depulped using a disc pulper. The coffee undergoes an overnight dry fermentation, followed by washing and a second fermentation under water.
It is then washed again, soaked in clean water, and finally moved to raised beds on the gentle slopes outside the mill to dry.
During drying, the parchment is typically covered at night and during the hottest part of the day to help maintain stable temperatures and protect quality
THE PRODUCER
Tegu is one of the wet mills owned and operated by the Tekangu Farmers Cooperative Society near the town of Karatina in Nyeri, Kenya.
This area is well known for its fertile soils and strong reputation for quality coffee production.
Founded in 1969, Tekangu FCS represents around 1,200 smallholder members, each typically farming less than half a hectare across five villages.
The name Tegu translates as “low place”, reflecting its position in the foothills between Mount Kenya to the north-east and the Aberdare Range to the west.
In addition to Tegu, Tekangu FCS also manages the Karogoto and Ngunguru wet mills.
Coffee is collected through three centralised collection points, serving farms located up to around 6km from the mill.

FAQ

> WHEN WILL MY COFFEE BE ROASTED?

All our coffees are roasted to order. we roast and ship on the same day or within 48 hours of order.

You’ll find the exact roast date printed on the box.

> HOW IS BEST TO BREW MY COFFEE?

Each and every coffee brews differently and requires certain tweaks to make perfect, but we have our recommended brew guide in the coffee overview section to help you out with a recipe to get you started. If you're struggling, please reach out to us at: hello@carettacoffee.com and we'll be glad to help you out. As we roast light, we recommend going much finer on espresso - but just play around with the brews and enjoy the process.

> HOW LONG SHOULD I REST MY COFFEE?

We recommend resting the coffee for at least 2 weeks from roast date to allow the coffee to degas and open up its true flavour. For our coffees, we roast our coffees light, so to get the best possible flavour experience we recommend 2-3 weeks of resting.
